The Church has an Idolatry Problem
1 Now some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 3 “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them? 4 “Therefore speak to them, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols, 5 that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.” ’ 6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. 7 For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, then comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I the Lord will answer him by Myself. 8 I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people. Then you shall know that I am the Lord. 9 “And if the prophet is induced to speak anything, I the Lord have induced that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel. 10 And they shall bear their iniquity; the punishment of the prophet shall be the same as the punishment of the one who inquired, Ezekiel 14:1-10 NKJV |
There’s a term being bandied about called ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’[1]. It doesn’t refer to President Trump himself, but to other people's reaction to him. I had to look the term up because its meaning could be ambiguous. It’s used by the administration supporters to refer to unfounded and extreme reactions to the things Donald Trump does or says. For me that’s one valid use of the term, but it also lends itself to the Trump supporters that take everything he says uncritically. Both sides of this meaning for TDS are idolatrous.
If Trump can do no wrong. If everything bad must be someone else’s fault. If criticism of Trump generates anger and hatred, if his enemies ‘get what they deserve’, or if you are equating him with Jesus Christ, then Trump has become a kind of god for you. According to Ezekiel (and pretty much every other prophet in the Bible), if you don’t repent it will not go well with you. This does not apply to every Trump supporter. You can support Trump, you can support his policies, what you can’t do is turn your will and thought over to Trump. If you are 100% behind everything Trump says or does, then you have a heart idolatry problem. Most importantly, if you think that you can’t be a Christian and be opposed to Trump, you are definitely suffering from this idolatry of the heart. It’s time to start reading the prophets. Examine everything Trump is standing for to see if it is opposed to God’s word. Read Daniel 4 where God punishes Nebecanezzer for his pride, also read:
| Isaiah 1:14-17 | |
14“Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them. 15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. 16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.
| Leviticus 19:34 | |
|
34 The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
| Jeremiah 7:5-7 | |
|
5 “For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor, 6 if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt, 7 then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.
| Galatians 5:22-23 | |
|
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
| Matthew 5:43-48 | |
|
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
| Luke 6:27-30 | |
|
27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.
But there’s another side to TDS, the original meaning. If everything Trump says and does is evil, if support of Trump causes anger and hatred, if every bad thing that happens to Trump is his own fault, if you can’t pray for Trump, if you can’t engage Trump supporters respectably, if you are 100% against everything Trump says or does, or if you think that you can’t be a Christian and support Trump, then you have an idolatry of the heart problem. According to Ezekiel, you are also under God’s wrath. It’s time to start reading:
| 1 Samuel 24:4-7 | |
|
4 Then the men of David said to him, “This is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.’ ” And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 5 Now it happened afterward that David’s heart troubled him because he had cut Saul’s robe. 6 And he said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7 So David restrained his servants with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul got up from the cave and went on his way.
| Acts 23:4-5 | |
|
4 And those who stood by said, “Do you revile God’s high priest?” 5 Then Paul said, “I did not know, brethren, that he was the high priest; for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’ ”
| I Timothy 2:1-4 | |
|
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
| Leviticus 20:2 | |
|
2 “Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.

| Ezekiel 16:20-21 | |
|
20 “Moreover you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter, 21 that you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire?
| Jeremiah 19:5 | |

5 (they have also built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into My mind),

22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.
| Leviticus 20:13 | |

13 If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
| Jude 1:7 | |

7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
| Romans 1:26-28 | |

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
|

| Luke 6:27-30

I have a rule for myself. If watching a particular news station, or reading a particular news source makes me angry, I put myself on a diet from that news source. News is business, engagement in news is profit. If you make people angry they will engage more and you will profit more. The result is we are not getting a good dispassionate discourse from any source.
If you struggle with either of these, repent. Don’t be worried that you fall into this trap again, we are all human, but you need to come back to your senses. If you are a Trump supporter, you need to find things that he needs to be called out, and call them out. If you are a critic, stop chasing squirrels. Look at the most important issues and press those. Look for things that Trump is doing well, and acknowledge those. It costs you nothing, but it will break the syndrome and remove Trump’s ability to control you.
Finally for those with a sober mind on either side. You do need to get louder. You need to publicly engage with each other so the rest of the Church and the rest of the Nation can see what civil discourse is supposed to look like. Most importantly, call out your own side for what they are getting wrong.
I will repent with you in my part in this idolatry. May we, together, get back to God and thus avoid the coming judgment on the Church.

[1] Trump isn’t the first to have his supporters describe their opponents of having a ‘Derangement Syndrome’. It was used by Bush and Obama supporters before Trump. Now some are describing Trump as having ‘Biden Derangement Syndrome’. I continue to use this because the inherent ambiguity about what it means serves to remind us that there are unhealthy preconceptions on both sides.
